This Privacy Policy explains how Subtitle Downloader & Editor (the "Extension", "we", "us") collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the browser extension and its associated website at subtiltee.com. It covers every version from 3.0.0 onward.
The Extension downloads subtitle tracks from streaming platforms and can optionally translate them. Core subtitle extraction runs locally in your browser. Some features — accounts, payment, translation, usage quota, and product analytics — require sending limited data to us or to named third parties. Those flows are described in full below.
The rules governing your use of the Extension are set out separately in our Terms of Service.
If you create an account or purchase a paid plan, we collect:
You can use the Extension's free tier without creating an account. In that case we collect none of the above.
We collect product analytics to understand which features are used and where the Extension fails. Each installation is assigned a randomly generated identifier (for example ext_4f3c…) stored locally in your browser. This identifier is not derived from any personal information. If you sign in, it is linked to your account ID so that your activity is consistent across devices; if you sign out, a new random identifier is generated.
We record events such as:
We do not record the titles of what you watch, the contents of subtitle files, your browsing history, your keystrokes, or any activity on sites where the Extension does not run. Automatic capture of page interactions is explicitly disabled.
When the Extension is installed, it reads a marketing source tag (for example ref_source=google_ads) from our own website to learn which campaign or link brought you here. This tag contains no personal information, is stored locally for up to 90 days, and is attached to a purchase if you make one, so we can tell which channels work. It is not used to track you across the web.
Downloading and editing subtitles happens entirely on your device. Subtitle files are fetched from the streaming platform you are visiting, converted in your browser, and saved to your computer. Their contents are never sent to us and never stored on our servers.
Translation is the exception. If you choose to translate a subtitle, the subtitle text is sent to the translation provider you select in order to be translated. Depending on your choice, that provider is:
The text is sent directly from your browser to the provider, is used only to return the translation, and is not retained by us. Each provider handles that text under its own privacy policy, so please review the policy of the provider you enable. If you never use the translation feature, no subtitle text ever leaves your device.
The free tier includes a limited number of downloads per month. To grant your monthly reset fairly and prevent the same person from resetting the counter indefinitely by reinstalling, our quota service derives a non-reversible technical fingerprint from your IP address and operating system.
This fingerprint is a one-way hash. It cannot be used to recover your IP address, it is not linked to your identity or your browsing, and it is used for one purpose only: answering whether this device is entitled to a quota reset this month. Your IP address is also processed transiently by our infrastructure provider, Cloudflare, as is normal for any internet request.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising. These are all the parties data is shared with, and why:
| Party | Data shared | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog | Anonymous install ID, usage events, browser type | Product analytics (EU-hosted) |
| Stripe | Email, payment details, marketing source tag | Payment processing |
| Supabase | Email, account and subscription records | Account database and authentication |
| Cloudflare | IP address (transient), device fingerprint hash | Hosting and quota service |
| DeepL, OpenAI, Google, Groq, OpenRouter | Subtitle text you choose to translate | Translation — only for the provider you enable |
| Tally | Whatever you voluntarily type in a form | Feedback and uninstall surveys |
We may also disclose data if required to do so by law, or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
The Extension requests the following browser permissions:
The Extension declares <all_urls> as an optional permission. It is not granted on install and remains inactive unless you deliberately turn on Universal Mode, which lets the Extension detect subtitles on sites beyond our supported list. Your browser will ask for your explicit consent at that moment, and you can revoke it at any time by turning the toggle off. While Universal Mode is off, the Extension cannot access any site outside the host permissions listed above. Even with it on, the Extension only looks for subtitle tracks — it does not collect page content, form data, or browsing history.
The Extension only accesses subtitle tracks that the video player already exposes for display or accessibility purposes. It does not decrypt, bypass, or circumvent any digital rights management, and it does not download video or audio content.
Depending on where you live (in particular under the GDPR and the CCPA), you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You can:
The Extension is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
We may update this Privacy Policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected by a new "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes to how we handle your data will be announced in the Extension.
